National Bone Board / NBB at UKE

NBB Logo

The NBB serves to strategically network the osteological expertise present in several locations in Germany in order to identify, characterize and subsequently optimally treat rare disorders of the musculoskeletal system in this group.

This urgently requires the strong collaboration of several specialist areas such as osteology, genetics and molecular biology as well as pathology and radiology.

In addition to this coordinating role the National Bone Board is tasked to provide the complete and sustainable documentation as well as prospective collection of data on these rare and very individual progressions of diseases.

The National Bone Board is equally a point of contact for medical colleagues, affected persons and / or their relatives.

Welcoming address of the UKE's dean Prof. Dr. Dr. Uwe Koch-Gromus:

Portrait Koch-Gromus

The characterization, diagnosing and therapy of rare diseases is a part of the essential core competences of the university medical center. This personnel-wise, logistically/instrumentally and therefore also financially highly expensive medical activtiy can only be successfully achieved by an interdisciplinary team.

The National Bone Board at UKE has taken up this interdisciplinary teamwork in order to decipher rare disorders of the skeletal system. I wish them success in the favorable realization of their high ambitions!

Our Aims

Forschung

The strategic networking of different osteological centers in Germany should support the identification, characterization and therapy of rare disorders of the musculoskeletal system according to state of the art research.

The creation of this interdisciplinary network should close a health care gap for patients with rare disorders if the musculoskeletal system.

Furthermore the complete and sustainable documentation as well as the prospective collection of these very individual progression of diseases within this network is an essential aspect of generating a sustainable increase in knowledge with regards to these rare disorders and the basic physiological and pathological mechanisms of the musculoskeletal system.

Our Mission

Dexa Untersuchung

Disorders of the musculoskeletal system are decidedly common and are among the top reasons for doctor visits, hospitalizations and doctor's certificates in Germany. The indivdual socio-economic burdens arising from this are enormous.

Besides the common diseases of the musculoskeletal system there are rare and in part highly complex local and/or systemic disorders of the locomotory system that have been understood barely or unsufficiently so far.

Just these rare and in part unknown diseases often cause a high level of suffering in the person affected and lead to great costs in the health care system due to i.e. repeated docotr visits and instrumental examinations.
